Echoing the slogan of the 2024 Paris Olympics, "Games Wide Open." YCIS is a place where students' sporting dreams can sprout, striving towards higher, faster, stronger, and more united goals.
In 2008, Natasha, a student from YCIS Shanghai, became the 46th torchbearer for the Beijing Olympics Shanghai leg. Whilst a student with us, she actively participated in various charitable activities on and off campus, helping vulnerable groups.
On 22 April, YCYW invited China's first Olympic swimming gold medalist, Zhuang Yong, to deliver an exclusive lecture. The Olympic champion's dedication and resilience in sports, as well as her ability to confidently navigate multiple roles after retirement, inspired YCIS students to boldly explore their interests and possibilities. They are encouraged to dream, embodying the courage and perseverance of the sports spirit to break through life's boundaries and find their path.
YCIS Shanghai considers the promotion of sports culture to be one of its core objectives. By offering a wide range of sports programmes and vibrant sports clubs, students actively participate in their favourite sports, igniting a passion for athletics. Thus, YCIS students forge closer bonds, increase confidence and build resilience.
Last semester, students showcased their prowess in various sports, reaping abundant rewards in multiple competitions.
The boys' and girls' football and badminton teams excelled in SISAC, triumphing over strong competitor schools. The swimming team participated in the ACAMIS and Shanghai Swimming League, consistently surpassing personal bests and setting multiple school records. In fencing, students also achieved remarkable results in foil, épée, and sabre. YCIS students also made their debut at the ACAMIS Golf, demonstrating maturity, confidence, and composure against seasoned opponents and performing at their best.
In the YCYW Games in June, a three-day event akin to a mini-Olympics for students, YCIS Shanghai students displayed their talents and brought home several trophies. After intense competition in football, basketball, volleyball and handball against schools from across China.
YCIS Shanghai jointly lifted the championship trophy of the inaugural YCYW Games.
Sports can convey values of respect, tolerance, and cooperation, opening the door for people to understand civic consciousness and energizing communities.
Through sports competitions, students can spontaneously strive as a team towards a common goal, learning to listen and be inclusive through cooperation and communication. They develop a sense of fair competition from rules and cultivate resilience through both failure and victory, qualities that will help them succeed in their future lives and careers.
One example of sporting acheivement is Frank. At YCIS Shanghai, Frank excelled in basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, soccer, table tennis, and rugby, serving as captain of the basketball and volleyball teams. In basketball, his speciality, he had an impressive record, including winning 210 games, earning 126 MVP titles, and motivated the school team to win the first Shanghai championship trophy at the ACAMIS Shanghai Basketball Tournament.
Frank's passion for basketball grew after joining YCIS Shanghai. Through numerous games, Frank's talent became evident. Basketball also reshaped his character: from a relatively quiet boy, he gradually became outgoing.
As a captain, he learned to lead the team, spending time communicating with teammates, boosting morale, and addressing everyone's doubts and concerns. He led targeted training sessions for teammates with different abilities and personalities, uniting them into a cohesive force both on and off the court, inspiring morale and collective growth.
Frank dreams of pursuing a professional basketball career. He is currently enrolled as a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is proudly affiliated with the UCLA Bruins, a team renowned for securing multiple NCAA team championships and fostering numerous sports stars. Basketball has not only given him a lifelong passion for sports but also brought about personal growth, skill development, and the setting of future goals with brave pursuit.
YCIS Shanghai adheres to the concept of "Holistic Education," using sports as one of the ways to achieve educational goals. Aligned with the Olympic spirit, students are encouraged to embrace diversity, develop resilience, and foster leadership within the community. They are poised to become future leaders with an international perspective and comprehensive development, shining brightly in the future.
