Graduation day stirs many emotions: anticipation, excitement, love, and pride, mixed with nervousness and the bittersweet knowledge that the students are marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. For many, this means moving from the life they know in China to far-flung destinations, such as Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This is a time of great change for our Year 13 students, but also one to unite and celebrate the hard work and good times that have brought them to this point in their academic journeys.
For this special occasion, we were delighted to bring the YCIS Shanghai graduating classes from both sides of the river together for a combined graduation ceremony at the elegant Pudong Shangri-la Hotel. Seeing the students celebrating this milestone together was even more joyous considering the disruption brought to our lives by the pandemic over the past two academic years.
The ceremony, led by Ms Lauren Rogers—YCIS Puxi Acting Vice Principal—and Ms Amy Yang—YCIS Pudong Secondary Head of the Chinese Department—featured addresses from current Year 13 students, Education Directors Mr Jeroen Gakes and Ms Julie Zheng, along with a message from our CEO and School Supervisor, Dr Betty Chan Po-king.
During her message, Dr Chan acknowledged the changes this cohort have seen in their education due to the pandemic and posed some questions for the graduates: “Especially in the past two years, school life and learning approaches have taken acute twists and turns. How has education made you stronger and wiser when faced with challenges? Where are you standing now in the new equilibrium?” She went on to describe how opportunity can present itself in hard times: “Adversity has become an opportunity for all of us who are raised, educated and trained to be hopeful, resilient, courageous, and innovative.”
Dr Chan concluded by leaving the students with some sage advice: “I am sure you are all anxious and eager to leap into the future. Wherever you are, in all your pursuits, be curious and creative, be bold and intuitive, be confident and persistent. It is alright to be aggressive and assertive in attaining your goals, but remember, always be guided and grounded by integrity and compassion. This is how YCYW people differentiate and shine.”
The students posed for photographs with each other and their loved ones and joined for a combined photo of all the YCIS Shanghai Class of 2021 graduates. The Puxi and Pudong groups separated for part of the ceremony and the handing over of diplomas by the Co-Principals, maintaining some of their campus traditions. But all felt that it was a great opportunity to bring the students together to a first-class venue for this important celebration.
Congratulations and all the best to the YCIS Shanghai Class of 2021 as they progress in their learning journeys, matriculating at leading universities worldwide. We look forward to updates from everyone in the future as they transition from being students to becoming YCIS Alumni for life!
Special thanks to YCIS Puxi parents Mr Issam Wahdan and Mrs Hui Xie, founders of VMC Group, who sponsored this event.
