“Two Worlds. One family.” This is the theme of the musical Tarzan, and there couldn't be a more perfect theme to explore through theatre for YCIS Shanghai – a school dedicated to providing the best of the East and the West. This month, YCIS Shanghai premiered China’s first-ever production of Broadway’s Disney musical spectacular, Tarzan, with music by Phil Collins.
A talented and committed group of 20 Secondary students from Gubei Campus had been rehearsing since September to stage the debut production in the school’s theatre. Mr Robert Dil, Drama Teacher at Gubei Campus and director of the production, says, “The best thing for me was seeing all of the students come together. That sense of community is what Tarzan is all about, and it’s exactly what we created through the show.”
Mr Dil continues, “YCIS has an incredible Performing Arts Department and it is a pleasure to be a part of that legacy. Congratulations to our cast, crew, band, and creative team for all of your passion, dedication, and desire to bring this show to life. It takes a village to stage a musical, and this village truly worked together to bring the spirit of this timeless story of family to life.”
The hugely successful three nights of performances made the crowd laugh and dance, and brought an emotional standing ovation for the hardworking students. Congratulations to the talented cast, crew, and faculty for the fantastic production!
