In preparation for the start of the 2013/2014 school year, all of the Chinese teachers from YCIS Shanghai Pudong Primary and Secondary sections participated in a full day workshop as part of their annual orientation.
Eight Chinese teachers who have obtained high potential status (HiPo) with the Yew Chung Education Foundation shared their teaching strategies and experiences, and highlighted the most wonderful moments of their classes, providing useful information and guidance for the new teachers.
Throughout the training, the teachers explored the subjects of how to best meet each student’s needs based on their language level, and how to help the students reach their full potential.
A “quiz” was also held in between workshops, to test teachers about education theory and literary knowledge. The teachers enjoyed experiencing the role of being students on test day, for a change!
One teacher noted that, during the training, she came to realise that even adults with similar knowledge can have different perspectives, so the same must be true for children. She aims to encourage students to express their opinion by emphasising group discussions in her future class, she added.
Overall, the training was a very beneficial way to prepare for the year, and provided an opportunity for the YCIS Chinese teachers to reflect, share, and further improve their dedication to the teaching profession.
