On August 23, 2023, Mr Gao Guozhong, General Director of Shanghai Pudong New Area Education Bureau, led a delegation that visited Yew Chung International School (YCIS) of Hong Kong and the Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE). Dr Esther Chan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (K-12 Education) of the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network (YCYW), and Dr Lydia Chan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Tertiary Education), along with other network leaders, accompanied the delegation.
The delegation visited the Kindergarten, Primary, and Secondary Sections of YCIS Hong Kong and the Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education. Dr Esther Chan; Dr Lydia Chan; Dr Xuejun Xu, YCYW's Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Business Development Officer; Professor Allan Yuen, President of YCCECE; and Professor Frank Lam, Vice President of YCCECE, welcomed the delegation and participated in the exchange. Dr Troy Lui, YCYW's Chief Education Officer, and YCIS Hong Kong School Leadership Team members gave the delegation a detailed introduction to Yew Chung's more than 90-year legacy of educational excellence. They explained the network's long-standing tradition of blending the best of Chinese and Western educational philosophies. This approach is reflected in the daily practices of the Bilingual Learning Communities (BLCs) and the collaborative teaching of Chinese and Western educators.
In addition, the school management team underscored YCYW's remarkable achievements with the Yew Chung Approach and the 12 Values. Professor Yuen highlighted the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network for educational advancement. In response to invitations from local governments, YCYW has established Yew Chung and Yew Wah kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in various cities and provinces in the Chinese mainland since the 1990s.
Mr Gao discussed the efforts being made to modernise Chinese education in the Pudong New Area, as well as Pudong's leadership in construction and comprehensive educational reform in the region. The participants exchanged insights about educational development in both Shanghai and Hong Kong. The delegation acknowledged YCYW's dedication to offering international education with a unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures and fostering the development of high-quality education in Pudong. The delegation also expressed their hope to promote national education through visits between the youth of Shanghai and Hong Kong and looked forward to the continuation of in-depth discussions regarding exchanges and collaboration related to international education.
During the visit, the delegation met with Dr Betty Chan Po-king, YCYW's Chief Executive Officer and School Supervisor. The Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network has strong ties to Shanghai. YCIS Shanghai, established in 1993, was the first Yew Chung school in the Chinese mainland. Over the years, a number of Yew Wah schools have been established in Shanghai, offering a comprehensive spectrum of the Yew Chung and Yew Wah brands of educational excellence. In 2015, the Yew Wah International Education School of Shanghai Lingang was established, and it has promoted the development of high-quality education in the Lingang area.
YCYW anticipates continuing collaboration with the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, driven by further development and innovation, and united by a shared aspiration in the pursuit of outstanding international education.
