Recently, a Year 8 Advanced Maths class from Gubei Campus got a taste of what it’s like to be a teacher as they travelled to the Hongqiao Campus for an opportunity to teach Year 4 students. The Secondary students led a 30-minute Maths lesson that covered modules including division, multiplication, fractions, decimals, and more. This unique opportunity unquestionably improved the Year 8 students’ collaboration and leadership skills, while providing Primary students with additional insight into their Maths coursework.
Prior to their visit, the Year 8 students prepared notes and props, and they compiled a short Maths book themselves. During the lesson, each Secondary student was responsible for teaching a small group of Primary students. The Year 8 students also got to know their “pupils” by leading a fun and quick introduction before delving into their specific Maths topic.
During the lesson, the Year 8 students were given the freedom to teach according to their preferred style, and some of the Secondary students found themselves to be natural teachers. However, all of the students learnt an important lesson about the hard work and dedication needed to be a great teacher. Justine, a Year 8 student, reflected on her first teaching experience after class. She said, “Although I didn’t know what to do at first, I eventually found a way to make the students involved and entertained through Maths. Overall, it was a fun experience and I learnt a lot.”
