Recently, art, culture, and history aligned for Year 3 Primary students at YCIS Shanghai Hongqiao Campus. To complement the students’ humanities studies on Roman mythology, they participated in a fun and educational art project with Mr Mark Montgomery, the Artist-in-Residence (AIR) for Hongqiao and Gubei campuses.
For the project, each Year 3 class had the opportunity to work one-on-one with Mr Montgomery. Each class created a collage-style scene from the well-known story, “Romulus and Remus”. Every student was assigned to create a section of the scene and a character from the story, and used a cut out photo of themselves to insert into the artwork. The students decorated their characters with paper costumes and accessories that accurately represented ancient Roman clothing, which they had previously studied in class. Mr Montgomery offered helpful advice and tips from the perspective of a professional artist as the students carefully crafted their contributions to the project.
The finished works of art decorated the classrooms beautifully, and served as an example of not only what can be achieved from working together as a team, but also how learning can come together through multiple disciplines, such as history and art. Throughout the school year, the two AIRs at YCIS collaborate with Kindergarten, Primary, and Secondary students on many different art projects to supplement core subject materials.
