The Ecology Action Team at YCIS Shanghai’s Pudong Campuses handed over a cheque to Roots and Shoots in September for RMB 25,000 yuan to sponsor the school’s third 1000-tree forest in Inner Mongolia. “This is an incredible effort and a credit to all the teachers and students who contributed,” said Western Co-Principal Chris Connellan.
Roots and Shoots is a global environmental and humanitarian youth programme of the Jane Goodall Institute. At YCIS Shanghai, students have teamed up to collect waste paper, experimented with creating a school garden, created a school compost with unfinished cafeteria food, and sold reusable tote bags to help raise money for Roots and Shoots’ campaign to plant one million trees in Inner Mongolia to stop desertification. This school year, YCIS Shanghai has also switched all bathroom paper products to Free Forest brand, which produces paper without using virgin-wood pulp, to further step up our green efforts.
