Ruth, Year 11, Century Park Campus.
So many kids my age have no idea what they want to do when they get older, and guess what? I’m in the same boat. I have my interests, but at this point, I don’t know if those are the fields in which I want to pursue a professional career.
The best thing about YCIS is that the school has really helped foster my interests. Back in Year 7, I really didn’t even know what I liked to do, but the structure of our schedule let me try out a whole bunch of things. Aside from our regular classes, we had Art, Music, Physical Education (PE), etc. I really got to explore different areas of study in Lower Secondary and I learned more about myself.
By the time I got to Year 10, it wasn’t as if I had magically decided what I wanted to do. Choosing subjects was a bit difficult for me. In the beginning, I wanted to pick Music, Design and Technology (DT), and Geography for my three subjects, but after a lot of discussions and talking to people in other year levels, I reconsidered. It was extremely helpful to have the support of all of my teachers and fellow students; for them to give me their input — it meant a lot.
I stuck with Music because it was the subject I liked the most, which I figured out in Lower Secondary. I also focused on Geography. During the last semester of Year 9 we did a unit in Humanities on the causes of World War I and I discovered that I love History, which is the path I decided to take.
Even now, as I’m getting ready for the IB, I’m still not quite sure what I want to do, but I’ve found subjects that I like, and I know that I have the full support of our faculty and student community, which makes me feel like I can do anything!
