Tis’ the Season at YCIS
YCIS Shanghai students celebrated the Christmas holiday in a big way in December, demonstrating the true spirit of Christmas throughout the entire month. The celebration activities ranged from Christmas concerts on campus to performances at a number of local hotels; some students even got to play hoops with Santa on the YCIS Shanghai Hongqiao Campus basketball court!
Winter Musical Gives Students the Chance to Shine
Beware the icy grasp of the Snow Queen and her ice sprites! For this year’s winter musical, Years 5 and 6 students at YCIS Shanghai Century Park Campus embarked on a six-week project to stage and perform a full-length musical, The Snow Queen, by Hans Christian Andersen.
On the Runway
For those who think leading fashion comes only from New York, Paris, London, or Milan, make way for what’s next right here in Shanghai! YCIS Shanghai Year 10 students from Gubei Campus all worked very hard to produce outstanding and interesting outfits for the 2012 IGCSE Fashion Show. The theme centred on “wearable works of art, based on the characteristics of an artist’s style.” In addition to being an exciting and creative event, the show was also an altruistic effort, as it was held as a fundraiser for the Starfish Trust Foundation, which supports children in Chinese orphanages who need urgent surgery.
Winter Table Tennis Success
The Table Tennis team at YCIS Shanghai Gubei Campus is growing, with increased numbers of students actively taking part in the competitions this year. Practices started in the beginning of October, and students trained hard for the first tournament, ACAMIS, which took place from November 8 to 11 in Qingdao. Team Members spent about three days at the tournament playing singles, and doubles, and team games. This year, the YCIS girls received first for the team games, first for doubles, and second and third for singles.
A Creepy-Crawly (and Very Fun) Field Trip
What is red and blue, has 42 legs, and has different colour hair? YCIS Year 7 Students on a field trip to the Insect Museum!
Students Perform for the Shanghai Community
Take more than 60 YCIS Shanghai Gubei Campus students, place them on a YCIS Gingerbread-house-themed stage set in the luxurious Kerry Parkside shopping centre, mix in a standing-room-only crowd, and throw in some red Santa hats: that’s the recipe for a successful Christmas concert!
Battle of the Bands
Students at YCIS Shanghai Gubei Campus were rocking around the clock during the annual Battle of the Bands. Not only were there vocals, drums, guitars, keyboard, and even a violin, performed entirely by students, this year's event also featured an entirely student-controlled sound system with Year 10 student Basile at the mixing desk.
Cool Science! Science Fair Captivates Crowds!
The annual YCIS Shanghai science fair at Gubei Campus has always been a hit, with senior students giving younger students and parents the opportunity to see (and experience) what they are learning first-hand, but this year the crowds were in droves!
Over 450 Attend Annual IB Workshops
October 19, 2012 saw over 450 teachers from all around the Asia Pacific area meet at YCIS Shanghai Century Park Campus for a series of workshops covering secondary and primary programmes and diploma-level subjects, such as Theory of Knowledge and Mathematics.
